Abstract     Background. Recent advances in tumor pathology have shown a strong association between infection with certain human papillomavirus (HPV) types and squamous epithelial cell benign and malignant lesions, particulary in the lower genital tract, in the upper part of the respiratory and digestive system and on the skin. Conclusions. Molecular hybridization techniques are the only reliable methods for determining the HPV types associated with individual lesions. Five methods: Southern blot, dot-blot, filter in situ hybridization, in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction, are described in this paper. These methods have the sensitivity and specificity required for clinical application. They are in widespread use and have already been introduced in our laboratory.
