Abstract     Background. The author presents newer immune based preventive and therapeutic approach to some infectious diseases. Despite modern development of medicine or just because of it, many patients are still dying of infection. There exists an increasing number of resistant microorganisms, immunocompromised patients and sometimes an excessive host immune response to the invading agent. So, the antimicrobial drug often cannot perform the job alone. Biologic response modifiers, clinically useful as adjuvant therapy will bring the new era. In this review, the proven, probable and possible uses of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, cytokines and glucocorticosteroids are presented, as well as interactions between antimicrobial drugs and immune system. Conclusions. The best approach in treatment of some infectious diseases might be to use a combination of antimicrobial agents and biologic response modifiers. The clinical indications still remain to be defined.
