Abstrakt     The most common causes for extraction of pri mary teeth are: caries and its sequelae, traumatic injuries in the pri mary dentition, and orthodontic reasons. Carious pri mary teeth with infected necrotic pulp can cause acute and/or chronic inflammation with accompanying pain and various consequences, such as cyst formation, developmental defects or improper direction of eruption of permanent successors, and even system ic complications. Therefore, a carious primary tooth that cannot be successfully treated despite appropriate efforts should be extracted. Extraction of pri mary teeth is indicated al so in certain cases of fracture or luxation. The most common orthodontic reason for extraction of primary teeth is disturbed eruption of permanent teeth. Premature loss of primary teeth can have a variety of undesirable consequences. The impact of extraction on space conditions in the dental arch depends on the number and position of extracted pri mary teeth and the timing of extraction. The most unfavourable are premature extractions of second primary molars. For a small child, early extraction of a primary tooth is usually an unpleasant experience. Nevertheless, it should not be postponed' when clearly indicated in a cooperative patient. With suitable preparation of the child and use of appropriate instruments and techniques, it can be performed safely and without complications.
