Abstract     Parallel examinations of three media for salmonella isolation with 148 samples (visceral organs of animals, litter, swabs, eggs) and feedstuffs have been carried out. On bismuth sulfite agar (BS) salmonellae were isolated from 124 samples (83.78 per cent) on brillantgreen agar (BG) from 95 samples (64.18 per cent) and on Drigalski agar (D) from 75 samples (50.76 per cent). The differences between all three media were in X test statistically significant (BS:BG and BS:D P less th. 0.005 BZ:D P less th. 0.01). The most successful isolation of salmonellae was on the medium BS inespective of kind of samples (90.42 per cent from feedstuffs and 72.22 per cent from other samples), less successful on the medium BG (61.70 per cent from feedstuffs and 68.51 per cent from other samples) as compared the medium D where isolation from feedstuffs was 64.89 per cent and 25.92 per cent from other samples only. Test X2 for BS:BG was P less th. 0.005 for BS:D P less th. 0.005 and for BG:D P less th. 0.05 with feedstuffs and for BS:D and BG:D P less th. 0.005, BS:BG P less th. 0.05 with other samples. From 148 samples 25 salmonella serovars were isolated. From the three tested media the medium BS was the most convenient for all serovars. For S. enteritidis the medium BG was the best. For serovars S. cerro and S. saint-paul isolation on the medium D failed. Also for S. infantis the medium D was not favourable. The European Union (EU) recommends the medium BG for salmonella isolation from animal sources. Also some other authors from the EU use this medium. Regarding this fact and regarding our results we introduced it also in our laboratory and the medium BS. But, in any way, we could not be satisfied with this medium only, because we obtained nearly 13 per cent more isolation on the medium BS. Therefore we will use for salmonella isolations from animal sources and from feedstuffs two media: the medium BG.(trunc.)
