Abstract		The author describes in detail the assessment of left ventricular function. After a brief introduction and presentation of the physiological basis of left ventricular systolic function, he divides indices of this function into three groups, as follows: haemodynamic parameters indices of pre-ejection and ejection period, and indices of pulsatile blood flow in the ascending aorta. Various methods for assessing left ventricular function are presented, and their advantages, drawbacks and clinical application are discussed in detail.
