Abstract     In the last two decades a number of studies have addressed the question of estimating the frequency of childhood coeliac disease (CD), and interesting controversies have arisen. The aim of the study was to estimate the incidence rate of CD in North-East Slovenia. During the study period 1975-1989 the total number of births was 62.349. The total number of CD registered in children was 48; all were included in the study. The cases were verified according to the ESPGAN criteria. Cumulative crude incidence rated for each birth cohort were calculated. In the 1980's an increase in the cumulative crude incidence of CD was observed, which can be compared with the results from Sweden, Italy, Sicily and Algeria. During the 15-year study period the mean age of patients at diagnosis of CD did not substantially change, the average age being less than 2 years. An estimate of CD incidence in children for the entire country of Slovenia as well as investigation of possible factors causing the increase in CD incidence in this area is indicated.
