Abstract     Background. Iliotibial band friction syndrome is a condition resulting from heavy strain to iliotibial band in athletes. The most significant sign is pain in the exterior knee joint, usually in the area of lateral femoral condyle. The pain is most intense when running long distances, and it occurs more frequently when running downhill because the steps are longer then. Conclusions. In 1994, the Ljubljana Trauma Clinic Sports Department treated a 21-year old female athlete, a longdistance runner. Iliotibial band friction syndrome in the right knee was established clinically. After an eight-week conservative treatment she was running again.
