Abstract     In partial hepatectomized rats, the effect of mitomycin C (MC) and antioxidant vitamins (A, E and C) on liver regeneration was studied. The drugs were applied to experimental to experimental animals three weeksbefore liver resection. For morphometric evaluation the percentage of liver regeneration was used. In some cases MR imaging was used as well. Liver specimens were analyzed morphologically using light and electron microscopy. Biochemical measurements of cholinesterase (nsChE) activity in liver and plasma were used to evaluate the liver function. The results of morphometric studies revealed that MC inhibited liver regeneration and that antioxidants abrogated the inhibitory effect. MC indiced severe hepatocellular injury. Antioxidants could protect liver against MC induced injury. In all experimental animals large number of apoptotic cells was observed. MC inhibited activity of nsChE in liver tissue and in plasma. The addition of antioxidants recovered enzyme activity in tissue as well as in plasma. The most effective protection in tissue activity was exerted by vitamin E. The highest plasma activity was seen with vitamin C. The presented results reveal that MC is able to influence liver regeneration after three weeks. Addition of antioxidant vitamins is able to neutralize MC induced injury. The findings suggest that cytoprotection in exerted through reduction of free radical reactions.
