Abstract		Okužbe osrednjega živčevja spremlja visoka obolevnost in umrljivost. Glede na mesto okužbe ločimo različne sindrome: meningitis, encefalitis, mielitis ter žariščne sindrome, npr. možganski absces, subduralni empiem in epiduralni absces. Okužbe povzročajo različni patogeni, npr. bakterije, virusi, paraziti in glive. Zdravniki morajo znati hitro prepoznati akutno okužbo osrednjega živčevja, opraviti potrebne diagnostične preiskave in takoj začeti z ustrezno izkustveno terapijo.Infections of the CNS are associated with high morbidity and mortality. They may be classified according to the anatomical component affected: meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis and focal infections such as brain abscess, subdural empyema and epidural abscess. Causative organisms include bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. Clinicians should know how to quickly diagnose acute infection of the CNS, order the necessary tests, and start appropriate empiric therapy promptly.
