Abstract     ln most child ren, a visceral swallowing pattern is gradually replaced by a somatic pattern between the age of two and four years. A visceral pattern that persists beyond the fourth year of life is considered dysfunctional because of its association with certain malocclusions. Clinical evaluation of the swallowing pattern is difficult and unreliable. Today, sonographic assessment of tongue movements during swallowing is regarded as a more objective tOGI. This technique makes it easier to distinguish between the two swallowing patterns and allows us to plan suitable orthodontic treatment. The use of the sonographic technique is presented in a patient with a Class III malocclusion and incorrect orofacial functions including visceral swallowing.
