Abstract | The role of non-invasive and invasive methods of haemodynamic monitoring in a multidisciplinary neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana is described. As newborns and infants represent one half to twothirds of admitted patients, non-invasive methods (particularly echocardiographic) prevail, together with invasive intrarterial blood pressure and central venous pressure monitoring. The experience with invasive artery pressure, cardiacouptut and oxygen transport measurement is not sufficient yet to allow the benefit from the data obtained to outweigh the risk of this procedure. With more experience and better equipment this procedure should be considered in all haemodynamically unstable children, particularly cardiac surgical patients and children with multiple organ dysfunction, who fail to respond to standard treatment. | |
