Abstrakt     The present results indicate that different substances can be localizied in the membrane at various positions: at or near the surface of the bilayer or in its interior. This localization also depends on the medium in which the substances are dissolved, as well as on the structure of the substance. The present results indicate that the damage caused by highly toxic anticholinesterase agents may not be exclusevely due to their inhibition of acetylcolinesterase but could also originate in an alteration of the cell membrane organization. It seems conceivable that such effects could contribute to axon degeneration, lesions in the brain, mast cell degranulation etc. It can also be concluded that for the study of allosteric phenomena in acetylcholineasterase spin labelled organophosphorus compounds with a short alkoxy or alkyl chain can be used.
