Abstract     The relationship between medicine and literature can be understood in two ways. First, one can identify many of immediate contacts and influences between both disciplines. Second, medicine and literature coincide in the broader context of a paradigm (T. Kuhn) or episteme (E. Foucault), which determines discourses of various scientific disciplines in a certain historical period. The first topic has been often discused by literary and medicine scolars and evolved into a broad research area. Thus the paper emphasizes also necessity of understanding the relationship between medicine and literature in the broader "paradigmatic" context, which allows to connect such a contemporary phenomena as e.g. alternative medicine, postmodernist fiction and some tendencies in modern literary criticism.
