Abstract     Reflections entitled "The motive of medical doctor in the work of M.A. Bulgakov as a symptom of break in the continuity of culture" are divided into three parts. The first part is focused on critical, if not vital, perception of culture which is historically defined by two forms of human understading and behavior - so called culture of shame and culture of fear. In the second part a doctor appears as a leitmotif in Bulgakov's work of art. it is pointed out that the work of Bulgakov itself establishes a clear distinction between the two cultures. The evolution of the motive indicates a discontinuity of Russian culture and shows the transition from the culture of shame into the culture of fear. In the last part it expresses the idea that there is a close connection between a single literary work, Bulgakov's work and the culture as a whole and concludes with a theorecital question: How are the work of art, text and culture interrelated?
