Abstract     Water plays an important role in the chemistry of glass ionomer cements. Soluble kations can be dissolved in the early of the setting reaction, resulting in inferior mechanical properties of the cement. The aim of our study was to monitor the diffusion of water into hardened glass ionomer samples, using magnetic resonance microimaging. Fuji II. LC glass ionomer was used for the investigation. Half of the samples were illuminated for 60 sec., the other half being allowed to set without photoinitiation. The analysis of the images gave information on water uptade by the cement and its internal structure. The results show that in both groups of samples, water reached the centre of the sample 60 hours after the start of mixing. The existence of large pores that may affect the mechanical properties of the cement was detected in the chemically cured samples. The microimaging employed demonstrates the potential applicability of this technology in the testing of dental materials.
