Abstrakt		Chromium concentration in tannery air is 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than the ambient air at that location. In addition to dietary chromium (24.3 micro g/day) tannery workers absorb substantial amounts of this element at the workplace which is reflected in their increased scalp hair (3.94 micro g Cr/g) and public hair (2.67 micro g Cr/g) chromium contents in comparison to the general population (0.17 micro g Cr/g). Slightly elevated hair chromium levels in the subgroup of retired workers might imply a slow release of chromium from body stores. Medical examinations of a group of tannery workers (n=28, F=17, M=11, age 37-76 years) displaying abnormal obesity (80 per cent) showed the same incidence (3 per cent) of metabolic disorders as is characteristic of the general population in that region.
