Abstrakt		Heavy metals can be serious contaminants of food products from animal and plant origin. In Slovenia, the surveillance of contents of heavy metals in food of plant origin is very poor. In the period from 1988 till spring 1994, 330 samples of food from plant origin were examined in the chemical laboratory of Regional Institute of Public health Celje. The results indicate that especially cadmuim is very often present in rather high concentrations. The amount of cadmium and lead ingested via food of plant origin, reaches 23.7 percent PTWI for cadmium and 10.2 percent for lead. The food of plant origin is represented with 30 percent in average food consumption. The authors emphasises the need of systematically surveillance of food contaminants and the national dietary study in order to asses the health risks due to food contaminants.
