Abstract     In the beginning the article brings some epidemiological data on urinary incontinence in women. The author's data show that the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women in Slovenia is 13,6 percent and is higher than in West Europe and USA. In elderly women (age group 65 years and more) the prevalence of urinary incontinence is even 49,5 percent. The classification of urinary incontinence in women is described. The author further describes investigations used in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence: patient's history, laboratory tests, gynaecological and neurological examinations, test for the objectivization of urinary incontinence, urological examination, urodynamic and neurophysiological investigations, X-ray and/or ultrasonographic examination. Urodynamic investigations (uroflow, urethral pressure profile and cytometry) are described in greater detail. Among them the most important one, cystometry is obligatory in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence, especially in determining of sensory and motor urge incontinence. The most frequent types of urinary incontinence (stress and urge urinary incontinence) and the diagnostic methods for their assessment are described.
