Abstract		Metformin is a first-line drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is usually prescribed along with non-pharmacological treatment. Metformin effectively reduces blood glucose levels, does not in crease the risk for hypoglycaemia and has favourable effects on body weight. Additionally, it prevents cardiovascular complications. In the treatment of type 2 diabetes, metformin can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antihyperglycemic drugs. The present article describes the effects of metformin on blood glucose, body weight, hypoglycaemia incidence and its possible combinations with other antihyperglycemic drugs.
