Abstract | The clinical utility of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in MS is well established. Our aim was to examine the value of pudendal nerve SEPs in the same group of patients with urinary symptoms. SEPs to stimulation of pudendal and tibial nerves, were employed in a group of 21 patients with mild to moderate multiple sclerosis and urinary complaints. Pudendal SEP showed abnormality in 48% and tibial SEP in 86% of patients. There was one patient with normal tibial and abnormal pudendal nerve SEPs. Tibial SEP seem to be more useful in evaluating nervous system dysfunction in patients with multiple sclerosis than pudendal SEP, even in patients with urinary complaints. On the other hand, abnormal pudendal SEP accompanied by normal tibial SEP may strengthen the suspicion of a conus medullaris lesion. | |
