Abstrakt     Juvenile hormone (JH) is a key insect hormone produced exclusively by a pair of endocrine glands, the corpora allata (CA). In locusts the CA are directly innervated by two types of morphologically distinguishable types of brain neurons with somata in neurosecretory center in the protocerebrum named pars lateralis. We investigated possible influences of these cells on JH hormone production. We developed a new preparation in which JH production was measured in glands with still intact functional nerve connections to the brain. Our results show that the CA are under neurally mediated inhibiton from the brain cells. The dramatic effect of nerve transection shows that in vitro measurements of JH production are an unreliable indicator of in vivo levels.
