Abstrakt     The Urgent Laboratory is the biggest unit of the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry. Along with regular work also urgent and 24-hour laboratory work for health in Ljubljana and its surroundings is performed by 42 employers. In the Urgent Laboratory about 10 000 data are processed daily. The computer information system, which is connected to the Central Urgent Block and Intensive Care Units, enables much faster and better organized work and reduces the number of mistakes. The basic biochemical and hematological analyses of serums or blood, cerebrospinal fluid and urine are performed, which help doctors diagnose or make the right decision about the treatment. Once the material is obtained, the emergency level of processing is defined to each sample. The samples brought from the Central Urgent Block are processed under the emergency level number 2, which means that the analyses are made in 30 minutes or at the latest in 1 hour ( depending on the number and the type of analysis; for example, sedimentation rate takes one hour). The Procedure of Processing Samples in the Urgent Laboratory. When the patent's blood is taken at Central Urgent Block, the desired analyses are ordered by a computer, where the accurate data of a patient are stored, the computer displays an ordering number by which the test tube of the sample is labeled. The sample is brought to the Urgency Laboratory. By entering in the computer the ordering number, the laboratory engineer obtains all the necessary information on the patient and required analyses. Then the laboratory number of the appointed sample is inscribed also on the test tube. Then the test tube containing blood has to be centrifuged for 10-15 minutes, portioned, and analyzed by Ektachem analyzer (Kodak) in order to get biochemical analyses. Hematological analyses are made by the STKS analyzer (Coulter). Most of hematological smears are done by microscope. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
