Abstrakt     In a period of 8 years, 243 samples of subgingival plaque were assessed by darktield microscopy. Twenty-two bacterial morphotypes were evaluated. The plaque samples were collected from root sites with the following characteristics: pocket depth (PD) > 7 mm 1); PD 4-6 mm (group 2); PD < 3 mm, healthy oral cavity (group 3); PD < 3 mm, active inflammation (group 4); PD < 3 mm completed periodontal surgery (group 5). The proportion coccoid cells in plaque samples ranged from 16% to 77% and was higher in groups 35 and 4 than in groups 2 and 1. In contrast, the proportion of mobile rods (7-44%), spirochetes (3-21%) and other morphotypes (12-19%) was lower in groups, 3, 5 and 4 than in groups 2 and 1. The results were analysed with the Man-Whitney U nonparametric test. Significant differences in mophotype ranks were found for the following group combinations: 1:4, 1:2, 2:3 and 3:4. Comparison of groups 1 and 2 (periodontitis) with groups 3 and 4 (healthy periodontal tissue) showed the highest levels of significance for differences in small and medium spirochetes, small and large mobile rods, lymphocytes, erythrocytes and coccoid cells. Comparison of group 1 with group 2 (two stages of periodontal disease) showed significant differences for all forms of spirochetes and blood cells. Comparison of groups 3 and 4 (healthy vs. inflamed gingiva) revealed significant differences for coccoid cells and mobile rods.
