Abstract     In a population sample of 244 residents of Ljubljana aged over 45 years, advanced periodontal disease was found to correlate with the following variables: smoking, obesity, gender and use of black coffee. Deep periodontal pockets were significantly more common in men than in women (p < 0.01). This was attributed to a significantly higher prevalence of smoking and obesity observed in men as compared to women. The study suggests that smokers are twice more likely to develop deep periodontal pockets by the age of 45 than non-smokers. The same is true for overweight individuals as compared to subjects with a low or normal body weight. If a habitual smoker is also overweight, the risk of advanced periodontal disease appearing by the age of 45 is 3.4 times greater than in non-smoking subjects with a normal weight.
