Abstract		In Slovenia a new Law on Health Care and Health In-surance has been enacted in 1992, The Law defines basic principles about what kind of drugs can be obtained by insurees of ZZZS (national health insurance agency) at the expense of the national compulsory health insurance. The Law authorized ZZZS to define detailed rules and procedures to be used in prescribing these drugs. The presentation reports on these rules. /t explains basic professional principles applied when ZZZS defines the list of these drugs. It a/so explains the new prescription form to be used for these drugs prescription. The amount of money spent by ZZZS on drug consumption is very large, and it indicates a need for concerted action of ZZZS on one side, and of general practitioners on the other side, in order to contain the ever increasing cost of drug consumption, if only possible without harming the health of the population.
