Abstract     Infective endocarditis is a rare condition, often occurring as a consequence of diseases in the oral cavity. Poor oral hygiene, caries and inflammation of periodontal tissues can cause bacteremia and infective endocarditis in suceptible patients. The main risk factors are prosthetic valves and valvular heart disease of various etiology. The paper presents the latest recommendations for antibotic prophylaxis of infective endocarditis issued by the American Heart Association, the indications for antibiotic therapy, and the most common errors connected with its use.
