Abstract     The present study was carried on to evaluate the presence of neuroendocrine cells in the epithelia of the urethra, vagina and vaginal vestibulum in the rabbit. Sections were treated with histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods. The histochemical argentaffin and argyrophil reactions showed positive cells in the vaginal vestibulum and in the caudal portion of the urethra. In the same tracts immunohistochemical reactions allowed us to identify cells containiag serotonine, gastrine and secretine. Ultrastructural observations, on the basis of the secretory granules morphology, allowed us to distinguish seven types of neuroendocrine cells. These cells don't show uniform distribution. Four cellular types are present in the caudal portion of the urethra; also in the caudal portion of vagina four cellular types are present, while in the vaginal vestibulum we have found all the seven cellular types.
