Abstract     Objectives: Combitube is proposed alternative to the endotrcaheal intubation. There is a concern that the intubation with the Combitube might be more time consuming then the clasaical endotracheal intubation. The aim of the study was to compare the time needed by a skillful operator to accomplish both tasks. Methodes: Time needed to intubate manneken was measured. Endotracheal tube was used first and than Combitube. Staff anaesthesiologist, residents and anaesthetic nurses were invated to take part in the study. The clock was started at the removal of the face mask, and stoped when satisfectory ventilation of mannaken lungs was achieved. The operator had to inflate the cuffs and connect bag and valvel device by himself. Hypopharyngeal cuff of the Combitube was inflated first. Tube placement was then checked, by inflation through eosophageal port and observation of the manakens lungs. In case of tracheal placment, the bag and valve device was connected to the tracheal port. We have tested the data for diffenceces in means using two sample t-test, assuming eaqual variances. Results: There were 31 measuremenst made with each device. Averige time needed for endotracheal intubation was 30,96s * 10,91s. For intubation with the Combitube averige time was 49,90s * 18,42s. The differences was significant at p<0,05. Conclusion: Intubation with the Combitube takes more time then endotracheal intubation, even with the trained personal. The clinical significance of this finding is not clear, due to limited clinical experience. We feel that in certen clinical situation, especialy when confronted with the patient with extensive facial trauma, this time consuming procedure mght proove inadequte.
