Abstract     Between 1991 and 1996 there were 1288 medical interventions due to traffic accidents and 1732 due to other injuries performed by the emergency medical service in Ljubljana. Traffic accidents often call for a multidisciplinary approach by cooperation of various public services (the medical service, the police, the fire and rescue service). All those involved in immediate care should consider themselves to be part of the emergency team, whose prime role is to treat the person who is ill or injured as effectively and as efficiently as possible. To do so they must integrate themselves into the team, realising that each member of the team is as important in his own way as any other and each has his own area of specialist expertise and part to play. Good cooperation among the various emergency services may even be of greater value than an individual's special knowledge and is therefore an imperative for the succesful conclusion of the rescue action. In Ljubljana, the cooperation between the medical and fire services is good. The relations to the police department could be improved in the following ways: - better communication (possible direct radio link), - better protection of the scene of incident, - better knowledge of basic life support techniques. Perhaps the best way to improve the overal cooperation among the various services is to organise meetings on a regular basis. This symposium is to be the first step in this direction.
