Abstrakt     In patients with extreme dentofacial anomalies, the management of skeletal discrepancies calls for an interdisciplinary approach, involving the cooperation of an orthodontist and a maxillofacial surgeon. To ensure successful progress and optimal outcome of treatment, an algorithm must be worked out, defining the role of each specialist in the consecutive phases of the treatment process. These include: (1) diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning, performed jointly by the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon; (2) preoperative orthodontic treatment; (3) simulation of surgical treatment on study casts and fabrication of interocclusal splints; (4) surgical treatment; (5) postoperative treatment with intermaxillary fixation; (6) postoperative orthodontic treatment with retention. The described principles are illustrated by a case report, presenting a male patient with mandibular prognathism, maxillary asymmetry and retrognathism, who was treated with bimaxillary osteotomy and eccentric horizontal rotation of the maxilla.
