Abstract     In fertility survey conducted in 1989 of 524 women aged 15 to 45. one of the most important objectives the research in abortion-seeking behaviour and in the demographic, psychosocial and behavioural determinants affecting it. Of the total, one quarter (23.3%) or 122 women had one or more abortions. Age, family structure, quality of family relations and the provision of information on reproductive physiology given by parents to adolescents proved to be statistically significant factors. Women with previous abortion experience were older, rarely but significantly more frequently had lived in a one-parent family, experienced poorfamily relationships within the family, and were inadequately informed on reproductive physiology. Other determinants of abortion-seeking behavior such as marital status, education, religion, economic status, number of children and reproductive aspirations showed no statistically significant differences between the observed groups. In addition, 6 out of 15 general societal attitudes on abortion, differed significantly between the two groups. The majority of women who experienced abortion clearly supported the preservation of the right of choice on abortion, but expressed preferences towards more restrictive indications for abortion that the women without this experience. Women with previous abortion experience indicate that abortion should be used only in the case of contraceptive failure, medical contraindications for use of other contraceptive method or shortage of contraceptive supplies. On the other hand the women without abortion experience are in favour of abortion on demand with no restriction. Also of concern is the lack of knowledge about contraceptive methods in the group.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
