Abstract		The number of persons found to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus in the world and in Slovenia. On initial presentation or in the follow-up period they may present not only with medical problems, but also have to deal with social and psychological issues. As their disease progresses these patients will need years of progressive medical care. We present a checklist and practical approach that covers the steps from history taking, physical examination, laboratory and other indicated diagnostic procedures. Accurate assessment is critical for the anticipation of prophylaxis and therapy of opportunistic infections and antiretroviral therapy.
Summary		Število okuženih oseb z virusom človeške imunske pomanjkljivosti v svetu in pri nas stalno narašča. Ob postavitvi diagnoze ali kasneje v poteku okužbe se lahko pojavijo ne samo izključno medicinske težave, ampak tudi socialna in psihološka vprašanja. Z napredovanjem bolezni ti bolniki potrebujejo vedno obsežnejšo in zahtevnejšo medicinsko oskrbo. V članku predstavljamo postopek obravnave seropozitivne osebe od prvega jemanja anamneze, telesnega pregleda, laboratorijskih in drugih preiskav, do spremljanja njenega stanja. Natančna ocena stanja okužene osebe je pomembna pri odločitvi za uvedbo profilakse ali zdravljenja oportunističnih okužb ter protiretrovirusnega zdravljenja.
