Abstract		The authors introduce the diagnostic laboratory procedures in the diagnosis of syphilis. Ther pay special attention to specimens for direct treponema detection from skinand mucous membrane lesions. The practical value of screening and confirmation tests and the interpretation of the results are discussed as well.
