Abstract     The article presents four models of social anxiety which try to explain the sources, characteristics and some of them also the treatments of anxiety in social contacts. The skills deficit model assumes an inadequate repertoire of social skills as the main cause of social anxiety. The cognitive self-evaluation model pays attention on the negative self-verbalizations and negative self-evaluation. The self-presentation model states that a social anxiety results from the motivation to impress others but doubts in an ability of being successful. The model of meta-self-consciousness focuses on the individual's preoccupation with the self-image "me as a shy person".
