Abstract     Family planning is a basic human right which ensures the individual a free choice of partner, number of children and child spacing and all the othet basic life choices and is the way to a satisfying and safe sexual life. Family planning is not only a civilisation achievement but also a great professional achievement for a better health protection of women and men and their children. The process of winning the recognition for the concept of family planning was in Slovenia - compared to other developed countries - rather long, as family planning has only recently become behaviour pattern and the way of life of the large majority of Slovenian population. The programmes of family planning promotion started in Slovenia more than 35 years ago. The inhabitants of Slovenia were at first more successful at planning births than pregnancies. This was achieved byinterruptions of pregnancies and afterwards with the use of contracption. Irrespective of ever more careful planning of deliveries and ever decreasing number of abortions, Slovenian women still die 3 - 5 times more often due to giving berth than elsewhere in the developed world. Adolescents die 3 times more often due to motherhood as the elder women and their new-borns also die more often than the new-borns of elder women. Therefore the most important risk factor for the reproductive health present the premature pregnancies of adolescent girls. Recognition of family planning concept is a great investment into safe motherhood. Therefore, it is necessary to continue with the planned current work, the education for a responsible partnership, promotion of health in fertile age and preventive programmes of reproductive health care. it is necessary to develop innovative and multidisciplinary programmes which will satisfy health needs of young people.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
To so sprva dosegali s prekinitvami nosečnosti, nato z uporabo kontracepcije.
