Abstract     It has been shown that phospholipid vesicles represent a good model for red blood cells and their shapes. The bilayer couple model predictions agree well with the observed shapes of red blood cells and of phospholipid vesicles. This model helps to understand the effects of external agents on the shapes. The effects of the external electric field on the shapes are studied in more detail.
