Abstract     The influence of drug use and abuse on traffic safety in Slovenia is analysed in terms of the number of commissioned toxicological examinations for drugs and psychoactive medicines in the cases of both trafic accidents and suspected driving undr the influence of drugs. Between 1991 and 1997 a marked increase in comminissioned toxicological examinations was observed. Apart from canabis use, heroin addiction is a major issue, i.ed. driving under the influence of opiates and drugs prescribed to addicts inmaintenance progremmes (methadone and benzodiazepines). Current traffic legislation classified driving under the influence of methadone prescribed by a doctor as a minor offence. Drug addicts, including those attending methadone programmes, do not meet the criteria prescribed for holders of driving licences.
