Abstract     In the samples tested in our laboratory in the period between November 1996 and February 1998 the presence of Bacillus cereus was discovered quantitatively and qualitatively. Strains from typical colonies grown on the basic (blood agar) and selective growth media (MEYP agar) were confirmed using the ISO 7932:1993 method and/or API 50 CHB. 50 strains were isolated and 27 showed the presence of toxin which represents 54%. 16 strains which were morfologicaly typical but not biochemicaly by the ISO methodology were confirmed to be Bacillus cereus with API 50 CHB. We also found the presence of Bacillus cereus to be low in most food samples in 76% less than 1000 cfu/g and thus the probability of food poisoning is small. Epidemiological data confirms this as there have been only 2 cases of food poisoning outbreaks caused by Bacillus cereus in Slovenia in the period between 1993 and 1997. In the future we intend to test all strains for the presence of the emetic toxin.
