Abstract     Kinematic analysis of the chest and abdominal wall movement using optoelectronic measuring systems is described. By adequate markers placement on the chest and adominal wall we can measure theirs 3-D positions and compute partial volumes of the trunk by summing up the volumes of individual tetrahedrons that the measured volume consists or by using Gauss theorem. High correlation between measured volumes using optoelectronic system and volumes measured with pneumotachograph has been observed. Method has been used for studying chest wal deformations during functional electrical stimulation (FES) of abdominal muscles. Volumes of upper and lower thorax and abdomen for the left and right half of the trunk has been computed. In normal subjects there is no imporfant difference between partial volume contribution to tidal volume during quiet breathing and during FES of abdominal muscles. In patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) the contribution of upper thorax is practivally negligible, therefore the augmentation of tidal volume is due to volume changes of lower part of the rib cage and the upper part of abdomen. System enables noninvasive measurement of trunk volumes beside the directions and magnitude of movements of the certain anatomical compartments. The main drawback for the clinical use are in relatively hard measurements and in time consuming operations.
