Abstrakt		The authors investigated the histomorphologic characteristics of veins in normal and rejected transplanted kidney. It was found that the small interlobular veins were composed of endothelium and basement membrane, while the valls of the large interlobular and arcuate veins also had smooth muscle cell bundles forming a rather distinctive medial laver similar to large extrarenal veins. In acute and chronic vascular kidney allograft rejection, these veins were as frequently infiltrated with T lymphocytes and macrophages as the artieries. The rejection phlebitis of extrarenal and intrarenal veins was transmural, while in arteries intimal involvement predominated. The reason for that may be the thinness and discontinuity of the vein media and internal elastic membrane, allowing inflammatory cells to infiltrate the whole thickness of the vessel wall.
