Abstract     The author deals with ethical decisions in children treated in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). He discusses the indications for sending children to the PICU, particularly when their condition is hopeless. The referring pediatrician shares the responsibility for the outcome of treatment equally with the pediatric intensivist. In the author's view the PICU can not be the place for dying or depositing hopeless cases. Determination of hopeless condition or terminal disease should be based on clinical experience rather than screening systems. He perlustrates ethical dilemmas in withholding and withdrawing of treatment and advocates the necessity of continuous education of medical and nursing personnel in how to approach the parents and relatives of critically ill children in the PICU.
Poudarja vlogo staršev in pomen pravilnega informiranja ter odnosa do njih. Zavzema se za stalno vzgojo zdravstvenega osebja.
