Abstrakt     We have followed the manifestations of secular trend in body height, weight, biacromial and bitrochanteric diameters in three generations of schoolchildren and youth in Ljubljana. We compared the respective means obtained in 1939-40, 1969-70 and 1991-92. The technique of measuring these parameters corresponded to those recommended by the International Biological programme. THe results evidenced a still persisting secular trend, but one that varied depending on the period of measurement, the subjects' sex and age and the parameters chosen. In both sexes secular trend was positive in body height, weight and biacromial diameter. it was most marked during the pre-war and first post-war periods. A comparisonof the two post-war periods showed a gradual deceleration though the secular trend was still present. The bitrochanteric diameter showed a negative trend. A gradual gracilization of the hips has also been observed, particularly in the girls. We attribute the secular trend in Ljubljana to the profound social changes occurring after World War II and to the rapid economic and cultural change that had transformed Ljubljana from a small provincial town into the capital of the Republic of Slovenia.
