Abstract     Besides higher level of patient treatment, effective postoperative analgesia also represents economic savings. This goal may be accomplished by awarness of patients, education of medical personal, introduction of rutine pain asessement of postoperative pain and organisation of pain service. Though, already known methods of pain treatment can be used adequetely, new ones can be introduced. The intesnity of postoperative pain after inguinal hernia repair can be modulated by a choice of anaesthesia (regional and local anaesthesia vs. general anaesthesia). The postoperative pain after inguinal hernia repair is not very intense and can be efficiently treated with a synergistic combination of centrally acting opioids and nonsteroidal antiinflamatory drugs (NSAID).
