Abstract     Basic cardiac life support is a link in the chain of survival, that has a scientific basis. Chest compression, negative intrathoracic pressure and high venous return with adequate chest compresison frequency and compression - decompression ratio act beneficially on the systolic arterial pressure during basic cardiac life support and cerebral perfusion. On the contrary, they have no effect on the increase of coronary perfusion. On the basis of new scientific evidence of smaller wentilatory volume needed for successful basic life support, there is a possibility to modify basic life support procedures in specific situations.
