Abstrakt     Emergency medicine physicians in Ljubljana performed 56 forced hospitalizations ot psychiatric patients from 1.1.1998 to 30.4.1998. Because of their specificity these hospitalisations are usually accomplished in cooperation with police force, sometimes as well with fire brigade and social workers. A reanimobil is used. We are asked to perform such hospitalisations by the patient himself, although he afterwards does not agree to be treated, relatives, patient's physician or psychiatrist or police. In the first case our help was needed because of a psychiatric patient who broke into the neighbours house. He was stabbing himself with knives and also throwing them towards other people. The policemen somehow hesitated in their actions and we lost some time as we could not intervene before the patient had calmed down a bit. During transportation to the reanimobil he stopped breathing, his peripheral pulse could not be felt anymore. Although reanimation was undertaken immediately we brought him dead and in chains to the emergency room of the Clinical Center. In the second case we were called to intervene in the appartment of a younger psychiatric patient. He made baricades out of furniture and was throwing glass objects towards the door.No discussion helped. After the successful intervention of the special police force unit he was taken to psychiatric clinic from safety reasons by a police car although he had not been that agressive by that time. According to the organisation of emergency medicine service it is required from the physicians to perform such hospitalisations but only when the life of the patient is in danger or he presents a threat to his surroundings (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
