Abstract     In a violent society, stab wounds are rather frequent and - if penetrating - life treatening injuries. By means of the emergent medical help bleeding can be stopped only on the limbs, while internal bleedings (in the thoracic or abdominal cavity) require surgical intervention. As the time to such an intervention is crucial for survival, quick and correct recognition of the emergency, fast transpoortation of the injured and basic resuscitation procedures (airway, breathing, circulation) should be provided by the emergency physician. According to the latest knowledge, prehospital treatment with infusions may sometimes even be harmful and should be administered with utmost care. Sigs and symptoms of stab wounds to different parts of the body are presented and explained with regard to the injured organ or system. Diagnostic measures and urgent surgical procedures after admission to a hospital are briefly described. It is pointed out that - under surgical surveillance - many penetrating wounds can be treated cpservatively, thus sparing the patient a surgical procedure without treatening his/her life at the same time.
