Abstract     Background. The aim of the study is to determine whether measuring plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL 6) might help to differentiate viral from bacterial infections, and to determine the influence of acetylsalicylicacid (ASA) on TNF and IL 6 plasma levels. Methods. TNF and IL 6 were measured in 30 patients with viral infections and 30 patients with bacterial infections on admittance to the hospital and again 24 hours later. Twelve of the patients with bacterial infections were given 500 mg ASA three times between both sample withdrawals. Eighteen healthy blood donors were included in the control group. Later, a second part of study was carried out. In four patients, hospitalised in intensive care unit, samples were drawn more frequently to determine dynamics of TNF and IL 6 during the first 24 hours of hospitalisation. Samples were analysed at the immunological laboratory of Department of Microbiology, University of Ljubljana Medical school, by using radioimmuno assay (RIA) and enzyme immuno assays. Results. No statistically significant differences of TNF plasma levels between patients with viral and patients with bacterial infections are found. Twenty patients with viral infections and eleven patients with bacterial infections have elevated plasma TNF levels.
