Abstract     Cr(VI) in coloured and noncoloured leather samples was determined by the spectrophotometric standard procedure DIN 53314 and by extraction of the Cr(VI)-HCl complex (277 K) into methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). Cr(VI) was determined in the organic phase by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The maximum permitted value for Cr(VI) in leather according to DIN 53314 standard is 2.5 mg kg-1. When Cr(VI) was determined by the spectrophotometry, the results obtained were above this value. In the same samples analyzed by MIBK extraction technique these values were below 0.2 mg Cr(VI) kg-1 . On the basis of the systematic study it was found that Qilution of samples as recommended by DIN 53314 procedure does not eliminate interference effects of coloured species and DIN 53314 procedure could not be applied in analysis of Cr(VI) in coulored leather extracts. MIBK extraction was found to be an appropriate technique for this analysis.
