Abstract		The development, basic criteria for compiling the list of esential drugs, and present situation in Slovenia are briefly presented. There is a uniform list divided into three parts: positive list, intermediary list, and negative list. A very large number of drugs are available to the majority of the population without additional payment because they have an additional optional health being spent on drugs. The budget planned for health insurance is not intended to be increased, thus other health programs are questioned. The situation is illustrated by the list of hypertensive drugs available.
