Abstrakt     The heterogeneity of Alzheimer's disease and the still incomplete state of pathophysiological knowledge are serious challenges to the development of pharmacological therapies for dementia disorder. A major challenge for clinicians is how to delay or prevent progression of the disease. We have discussed the efficacy of estrogen replacement therapy by promotion of growth and survival of cholinergic neurons as well as by decrease of amyloid deposition. Furthermore - considering that inflammation is a part of the pathological pathway leading to Alzheimer's disease - the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may play an important role in the improvement of memory and cognition. The free radicals are proposed to accelerate neuronal degeneration - antioxidants may block these toxic events. Also, N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists, neurotrophic agents and nootropics can help to delay the illness. Finally, the drugs affecting the processing of beta-amyloid open new perspectives for the treatment.
